Private Surf Lessons are offered year-round at our Rosecrans Ave. location in Manhattan Beach and are available to all ages and abilities. Private lessons are 90 minutes long, provide focused, wave-by-wave personal attention, and include the use of a surfboard and wetsuit. Our Instructors are experienced surfers, teachers, and watermen who are CPR and First-Aid certified.
Our Private lessons emphasize safety and fun, but we also take the next step and teach our students to view the ocean with a surfer’s eye so they can safely and confidently ride waves on their own. Our professional surf instructors have taught thousands of students and can assess and address bad techniques so students can improve and move forward on their surfing path. All of our surf lessons include the use of surfboards and wetsuits and we are well stocked in all sizes of both.
Our lessons take place at Rosecrans Avenue in the El Porto area of Manhattan Beach, just 2 miles south of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). With it’s stunning beach and consistent, year-round surf, Manhattan Beach is the best location in Los Angeles to take a surf lesson. Los Angeles Magazine listed El Porto and Campsurf in their August 2009 “Best of LA” issue as the “Best Beach for New Surfers“.
Use the “Book Now” button to the left to schedule your surf lesson. We require a credit card to secure the reservation, but you will not be charged until the completion of your lesson. You may pay at the beach with the card you have on file with us, cash, check or a different credit card.

The surf lesson was the best thing ever!!!! It was a perfect day, Patrick was her instructor and he was awesome!!!!!!! From the moment I had spoken to him on the phone to confirm the time and location of the lesson I knew it would be a great experience. Patrick was very friendly and wasted no time getting her out in the waves and surfing!!!!! My daughter Kathryn had a great time and will post photos as soon as she get a chance!!! We had a wonderful time in ca and we hope to go back in the near future and when we do I would definately sign up for another lesson!!!
Thank you for our surf lesson yesterday. We had a great time with Ryan. He was very positive, friendly and fun. My children were thrilled to be able to catch a wave and ride it in.

Below is a sample breakdown of what you can expect with your package. Keep in mind that surfing is a very difficult sport and people advance at different speeds. The information in the lesson plans above will vary from person to person and may need to be covered in more than five lessons.
Lesson 1: Topics covered include wave formation, checking the surf, water safety, surfing etiquette, and surfing equipment. We will focus on the techniques of paddling through the surf, catching waves, and how to properly stand-up on the board. Approximately 30-minutes of on-land instruction and 1-hour of surfing in the water.
Lesson 2: A more detailed look into wave formation and elements affecting waves and the surfing conditions. Review of surfing etiquette and instruction on how to surf on your own. Approximately 15-minutes of on-land instruction and the remaining time in the water.
Lessons 3 and 4: Depending on your ability you may take some time between your second and third lesson to try to surf on your own. Return for your third and fourth lesson with questions from your solo surfing experience and we will focus on where you were having trouble. If you’re ready, we will touch on turning and riding unbroken waves and will provide information on purchasing your own equipment.
Lesson 5: Take more time between your fourth and fifth lesson to see where you’re at with your surfing. The goal in this lesson is to paddle out past the surf line and catch the unbroken waves with the other surfers. Put all the knowledge you’ve picked up from the first 4 lessons and your solo experience and take it to the real waves. A major focus will be etiquette and how to safely and confidently surf with a crowd.
